Determining stingray movement patterns in a wave-swept coastal zone using a blimp for continuous aerial video surveillance

Stingrays play a key role in the regulation of nearshore ecosystems. However, their movement ecology in high-energy surf areas remains largely unknown due to the notorious difficulties in conducting research in these environments. Using a blimp as an aerial platform for video surveillance, we overcame some of the limitations of other tracking methods, such as the use of tags and drones. This novel technology offered near-continuous coverage to characterise the fine-scale movements of stingrays in a surf area in Kiama, Australia, without any invasive procedures. Landscapes and related land cover changes are essential elements of sustainable coastal zone management in Europe and in Latvia. The issue of landscape protection, management and planning was promoted as a result of the adoption of the European Landscape Convention (2000), while the Recommendations concerning the Implementation of Integrated Coastal Zone Management were adopted by the European Community (2002) to address land use issues. The Recommendations also emphasise the need to recognise the threat to coastal zones posed by Climate Change. In the Maltese Islands, insufficient attention has been paid to vermetid reefs, endemic Mediterranean bioconstructions widely distributed along the southern part of the basin. As a result, this is a largely-overlooked coastal ecosystem despite the multitude of ecosystem services it provides. Boulders disjoined from platform edges or accumulated in the nearshore are frequently transported and deposited in the backshore as a consequence of tsunamis and high-magnitude storm waves. We investigate this process in the Favignana Island (Egadi Archipelago) coastal zone by integrating geological and morphological data with numerical hydrodynamic analysis and radiocarbon dating. Boulders and sockets are detected in proximity to the shorelines of Punta Faraglione and Punta Fanfalo, which are located in the NW and SE sectors of the Favignana Island, respectively. Isotope distribution of dissolved carbonate species in southeastern coastal aquifers of Sicily (Italy)

Concentrations of major ions and the δ13C composition of dissolved inorganic carbon in groundwater and submarine groundwater discharges in the area between Siracusa and Ragusa provinces, southeastern Sicily, representing coastal carbonate aquifers, are presented and discussed. Most of groundwater analysed belongs to calcium bicarbonate type, in agreement with the geological nature of carbonate host rocks. Carbonate groundwater acquires, besides the dissolution of carbonate minerals, dissolved carbon (and the relative isotopic composition) from the atmosphere and from soil biological activity.
